Abstract
The growth of personal line insurance in rural communities in India has become increasingly important in strengthening financial security and reducing the economic vulnerability of rural households. Personal line insurance, including life, health, personal accident, motor, and other individual insurance products, provides protection against unexpected financial losses arising from illness, accidents, death, and property-related risks. Despite the significant size of India’s rural population, insurance penetration in rural areas remains relatively low due to limited awareness, affordability constraints, inadequate access to insurance services, and a lack of understanding of insurance products. However, the expansion of digital technology, government-supported insurance schemes, microinsurance initiatives, and improved financial inclusion has created new opportunities for the growth of personal insurance in these communities. This study examines the growth of personal line insurance in rural India, focusing on the factors influencing its adoption, the role of financial literacy and digital platforms, and the challenges faced by rural consumers. It also highlights the contribution of insurers, government initiatives, and technology-driven distribution channels in improving insurance accessibility. The study suggests that greater awareness, affordable and simple insurance products, efficient claim settlement, and stronger digital and community-based distribution mechanisms can significantly improve insurance penetration and contribute to the financial resilience and socio-economic development of rural households in India.
