Abstract The growth of personal line insurance in rural communities in India has become increasingly important in strengthening financial security and reducing the economic vulnerability of rural households. Personal line insurance, including life, health, personal accident, motor, and other individual insurance products, provides protection against unexpected financial losses arising from illness, accidents, death, and property-related risks. Despite the significant size of India’s rural population, insurance penetration in rural areas remains relatively low due to limited awareness, affordability constraints, inadequate access to insurance services, and a lack of understanding of insurance products. However, the expansion of digital technology, government-supported insurance schemes, microinsurance initiatives, and improved financial inclusion has created new opportunities for the growth of personal insurance in these communities. This study examines the growth of personal line insurance in rural India, focusing on the factors influencing its adoption, the role of financial literacy and digital platforms, and the challenges faced by rural consumers. It also highlights the contribution of insurers, government initiatives, and technology-driven distribution channels in improving insurance accessibility. The study suggests that greater awareness, affordable and simple insurance products, efficient claim settlement, and stronger digital and community-based distribution mechanisms can significantly improve insurance penetration and contribute to the financial resilience and socio-economic development of rural households in India.

Abstract Climate change has intensified the risks faced by Indian agriculture through unpredictable rainfall, droughts, floods, heat waves, and extreme weather events. Agricultural insurance therefore plays an important role in protecting farmers from income losses and supporting the continuity of agricultural activities. This paper investigates the relationship between climate-related risks and agricultural insurance in India. It examines the challenges associated with risk assessment, premium determination, claim verification, and timely compensation. The study also considers the potential of satellite imagery, remote sensing, weather data, and artificial intelligence to improve agricultural risk modeling and claims assessment. Particular attention is given to the need for affordable and transparent insurance products that reflect the diverse conditions of Indian agriculture. The paper proposes greater integration of technology, government support, and localized risk assessment to improve the effectiveness of agricultural insurance and enhance the resilience of farming communities against climate-related uncertainty.

Abstract Digital transformation has significantly changed the way insurance products are marketed, distributed, and serviced in India. The emergence of mobile applications, online insurance platforms, artificial intelligence, and automated customer-service systems has reduced traditional barriers to insurance access. This paper examines the impact of digital transformation on insurance distribution, with particular emphasis on customer acquisition, product comparison, underwriting, policy servicing, and claims management. The study explores how digital channels can improve efficiency while also identifying challenges related to digital literacy, cybersecurity, data privacy, and consumer trust. It argues that technology-driven distribution can complement traditional agents rather than completely replace them. A hybrid model combining digital platforms with human assistance may be particularly effective in reaching underserved populations. The paper concludes that responsible technological adoption, supported by appropriate regulatory safeguards and consumer education, can contribute substantially to the expansion and modernization of India's insurance sector.
👤 Presenter: Ms. Ananya Rao · Department of Management, University of Delhi
Abstract Artificial intelligence is emerging as an important technology for improving insurance claims management. Insurers are increasingly using machine learning, automated document processing, image recognition, and predictive analytics to detect fraudulent claims and accelerate settlement processes. This paper examines the opportunities and risks associated with the adoption of artificial intelligence in insurance claims management in India. The study focuses on the potential benefits of faster claim processing, improved fraud detection, reduced administrative costs, and enhanced customer experience. At the same time, the use of algorithmic decision-making raises concerns regarding data quality, transparency, bias, cybersecurity, and accountability. The paper argues that AI should be implemented within a responsible governance framework that maintains appropriate human oversight. Effective regulation, explainable algorithms, strong data protection mechanisms, and transparent communication with policyholders are essential for building trust. The study concludes that responsible AI adoption can significantly improve insurance operational efficiency while maintaining consumer protection.

Abstract Insurance awareness and financial literacy are important determinants of insurance participation among rural households. Despite the availability of several government and private insurance products, many rural consumers remain unfamiliar with policy features, exclusions, premium structures, and claim procedures. This paper investigates the relationship between financial literacy and insurance awareness among rural households in India. It examines how education, income, occupation, access to banking services, and exposure to financial institutions influence insurance decision-making. The study also considers the role of insurance agents, self-help groups, banks, and digital platforms in disseminating insurance information. The findings suggest that increasing insurance penetration requires more than simply making insurance products available; consumers must also understand the benefits and limitations of those products. The paper recommends targeted financial-literacy programs, simplified policy documentation, regional-language communication, and community-based awareness campaigns to improve informed insurance participation among rural populations.
👤 Presenter: Meera Iyer · Department of Hospitality Management, Kerala University
Co-Authors / Co-Presenters: Dr. Karan Malhotra (Assistant Professor, Department of Hospitality Management, Kerala University)
Abstract Microinsurance has the potential to provide affordable risk protection to economically vulnerable populations that are often excluded from conventional insurance markets. In India, microinsurance can address risks related to health, life, accidents, agriculture, and livelihoods among low-income households. This paper examines the role of microinsurance in promoting financial inclusion and improving risk management among underserved communities. It evaluates the challenges associated with product design, premium affordability, distribution, consumer awareness, and claim settlement. The study highlights the importance of community-based organizations, microfinance institutions, banks, and digital platforms in expanding the reach of microinsurance. It further argues that insurance products designed around the actual risk profiles and payment capacities of low-income households are more likely to achieve sustainable adoption. The paper concludes that effective microinsurance can reduce household vulnerability, prevent distress financing, and contribute to broader financial inclusion when supported by appropriate regulation and consumer education.
👤 Presenter: Kavya Sharma · Department of Management, University of Delhi
Abstract The emergence of InsurTech has created significant opportunities for improving accessibility, affordability, and efficiency within the Indian insurance sector. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, big-data analytics, cloud computing, blockchain, and mobile applications are transforming conventional insurance processes. This paper examines the role of InsurTech in expanding insurance access, particularly among underserved and digitally emerging consumer groups. It explores the use of technology in customer onboarding, underwriting, personalized product design, premium collection, policy administration, and claims processing. The study also examines the challenges associated with cybersecurity, data privacy, technological exclusion, and regulatory compliance. It argues that InsurTech can reduce transaction costs and improve customer experience while enabling insurers to develop more flexible and personalized products. However, technological innovation must remain consumer-centric and inclusive. The paper concludes that collaboration between traditional insurers and InsurTech firms can accelerate innovation while maintaining the stability and trust required for sustainable insurance-sector development.
